This report presents the national results on alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among young people in Bermuda. Despite efforts to decrease drug use among Bermuda's youth, substance abuse remains a major health and safety problem. Drug Screening Results for Turning Point
Drug Users as Offenders
 |
Drug users form a large proportion of the prison population in Bermuda. Previous reports have shown that up to 60% of offenders have had a history of drug use (drug problems) on entering incarceration. It is also known that large proportions of the population of problematic drug users have been in prison. Many offenders continue to use drugs while incarcerated despite attempts to prevent the entry of illicit substances. This bulletin provides statistics on the drug prevalence of offenders at reception and from random drug screening while incarcerated for the period 2005-2008 at the Westgate Facility, based on information provided by the Department of Corrections. Annual BAC Levels 2003-2005

The proportion of alcohol to blood in the body is expressed as the blood alcohol concentration (BAC). In the field of traffic safety, BAC is expressed as the percentage of alcohol in deciliters of blood – for example, 0.08 percent (i.e., 0.08 grams per deciliter or 80mgs/100mls). Research has documented that the risk of a motor vehicle crash increases as BAC increases and that the more demanding the driving task, the greater the impairment caused by low doses of alcohol.
